Igive Mara a week. A full week without me after that since I sheâs made it clear she doesnât want to see me. She didnât give me a time frame, but twenty-four hours didnât feel like enough. A week sounds right.
In that time, I feed, try to forget the way she looked at me, as if Iâm some monster, as if she regrets ever being kind to me. Worse was that condemned look in her eyes as if sheâs as corrupt as some people who spend their life behind bars.
Still, I didnât want her to think Iâm entirely gone. I was sure covering the mirror in her room wasnât enough. Maraâs a spitfire now and respecting that means removing myself from her sight, not her life.
I check on her every night. I see her get a job at a new bar, not really the plan. Iâd hoped sheâd focus more on herself. Iâd hoped that sheâd do something she wanted to do, but even if I donât agree with her choices, I protect her like an unleashed guard dog.
When Tessa approaches me and gives me a knowing look, I flick her off. âDonât comment or Iâll steal your tongue.â
She simply shifts to a cat and flicks her tail at me.
Itâs an unwelcome reminder that Mara clings to Tessa and pushes me away. Unless sheâs horny and upset. Then again, Iâd told her weâd never do that again and now Iâm wishing Iâd stayed in her bed longer. I still remember her moans, her desperate attempts to touch me, how right sheâd felt in my arms, around me, moaning, panting, screaming for me.
One night to remember her by. Thatâs all I think of when I stand in her room and watch her sleep. I exhale smoke, wishing I was with her on her bed, feeling her steady, sure heartbeat echo in my head.
She stirs as I finish my cigarette. Rather than thrashing, she just flops over, then tightens her hold on her pillow. Her breathing isnât the same and her whole body is tense. She knows Iâm here.
Heâs watching me. No. I donât have to talk to him, I donât. It hasnât been long enough, and heâs not supposed to be here ... heâs probably been here every single night even when I canât see him. Stupid me, asking for space and just getting eyes on me instead.
I smirk slightly and tug on the part of my soul thatâs lodged in her. Weâre connected, forever. Thereâs no denying it, even if sheâs not fully aware of it. She calms as I think of standing in a meadow, where the world was quiet, on the cusp of spring.
She lets out a soft sigh and I approach. She hums. âWhatever you did isnât fair.â
I donât respond.
âYouâre not fair though, are you?â
âNot with you,â I murmur.
âDid you kill them all? Wait for the innocent people to leave? I havenât watched the news â couldnât watch the news â and ... and I havenât seen my old regulars either,â she says, her voice sticky and muffled.
